Requirements: in order to become an approved driving instructor you will need to fulfil the following criteria

You must be at least 21 years old or over

Have held a full car driving licence for 3 years

Pass a Disclosure and Barring Service check (CRB)

Applications to become a driving instructor can be refused if you have:

Been banned from driving

Have 6 or more penalty points on your licence

Non-motoring convictions

Part 1

The first of three, Part 1 is a theory test. Included in the Theory Test is set of multiple choice questions and a hazard perception video test. This learning will take part via distance learning online.

Part 2

The second test is a practical driver test. In this section learning takes place in the car 1-to-1 over 5 modules (2 hours each), and this will provide an opportunity to ensure the applicant is driving to the minimum expected standard to pass Part 2.

Part 3:

Part three is all about assessing the instructors ability to deliver a high standard of teaching to learners. On completing all Part 3 training, an applicant has the choice of two options:

1. Trainee licence (PDI). -Recommended

On completion of the minimum 40 hours of 1-to-1 training the applicant may opt to take a temporary trainee licence which will permit the training instructor to gain valuable experience delivering real lessons to real learners and ultimately better preparing for the final Part 3 test. Another great perk of this option is that is enables the training instructor to earn while they learn!

2. Straight into Part 3 test. 
Once the applicant is ready they may opt to go straight into their assessment for part 3.
